MTSU to celebrate centennial
Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro has celebrated many achievements in its storied history, but none will compare to this year's centennial event.
The 100-year "Traditions of Excellence" MTSU gala will be held Sept. 9. A 6 p.m. reception will be followed by a 7:30 p.m. dinner and dancing at the Embassy Suites Murfreesboro Hotel and Conference Center in west Murfreesboro.
"The Blue Tie Gala will be an exquisite event worthy of honoring such a monumental occasion as 100 years of excellence in education," said Michelle Stepp, associate director of alumni relations. "MTSU family and friends will come together in celebration while commemorating their place in MTSU's history and seeing the university into the next 100 years."
"We are anticipating this will be a once-in-a-lifetime event that you can't afford to miss," said Hanna Witherspoon ('64), another centennial committee volunteer. "It will be a really exciting time, an event to commemorate the contributions of alumni to this state, the nation and the world."
MTSU got its start as Middle Tennessee State Normal School. In 1909, the Tennessee General Assembly established a general education fund to create three normal schools, one in each of the grand divisions of the state out of a national need for better-prepared teachers.
The college opened its doors Monday, Sept. 11, 1911, on 100 acres of farmland that had belonged to the Tom Harrison and Joe Black families.
Today, MTSU is home to the largest undergraduate enrollment in the state, with some nationally recognized programs, including aerospace and the recording industry. In addition, MTSU now boasts one of the nation's first master's degree programs in horse science, and the Council of Graduate Schools in Washington, D.C., acclaims MTSU's Master of Science in Professional Science degree the only one in Tennessee as a model program.

The No. 1 college choice of Midstate valedictorians and the largest undergraduate university in the state, MTSU consists of nine colleges: Basic and Applied Sciences, Behavioral and Health Sciences, Jennings A. Jones College of Business, Education, Honors, Liberal Arts, Mass Communication, University College and Graduate Studies.
Students can earn bachelor's degreesin Arts, Business Administration, Fine Arts, Music, Science, Science in Nursing, Social Work and University Studies. College of Graduate Studies confer master's degrees in t10 areas, the Specialist in Education degree, and the Doctor of Philosophy degree.
