Donated kits to help Syracuse firefighters revive pets overcome by smoke

Syracuse, NY – The oxygen masks carried on Syracuse Fire Department trucks are great for reviving humans overcome by smoke or carbon monoxide, but are not so hot when it comes to reviving pets.

Dr. Eric Davis, a DeWitt veterinarian, and his wife, Hannah, solved that problem this afternoon.

The couple donated four “O2 Fur Life Pet Oxygen Mask” kits to the city department. At 1 p.m. they demonstrated how the kits work to Chief Mark McLees and a small group of officers and firefighters at Station 5 on North Geddes Street.

Apache, the couple’s smooth-coat collie dog, and Itty Bitty Kitty, their black cat, patiently served as models as the Davises went over the kits’ workings for the firefighters and the media. The department made a training video of the exercise, too.

“The Syracuse Fire Department prides itself on protecting life and property and we recognize that, for a lot of people, we’re talking about animals as being part of their lives,” McLees told his staff. “They’re companions. They treat them as members of their families.“

The Davises’ donation will help the department revive these pets when they are overcome at a fire, he said.

Davis, who owns the Lyndon Veterinary Clinic , said he was inspired to make the gift after seeking home oxygen equipment for one of his dog patients who has heart disease. During that search he came across a website that discussed how equipment designed to give oxygen to humans is ineffective on animals.

“The idea came to me: That makes sense; let me find out if our own community has this type of equipment to resuscitate animals,” Davis said. “And so the idea was born.”

The kit contains three oxygen masks, small, medium and large, a length of clear plastic hose and a leash. The gear comes packed in a small nylon bag. McCulloch Medical , a company based in New Zealand, makes them.

Unlike an oxygen mask for humans, the O2 Fur Life’s masks are long enough to seal effectively over snouts and beaks.

The sealing gaskets come off and are washable, so the kits can be reused.

The tubing can connect a mask to the oxygen supply carried on a fire truck, Davis said. If the animal is unconscious, the mask can be hooked instead to a specialized bag that the rescuer squeezes to supply air to the victim’s lungs.

The leash is flexible and can be hooked to the pet’s collar or looped at one end to make an impromptu collar. The bag the kit comes in can hold a cat or small animal while the mask is applied. Both are safety measures that keep rescuers from being scratched or bitten, Davis said.
