Roanoke Athletic Awards Announced at Senior Banquet

Michael Murphy ’92 was a three-year letterman for the men’s basketball team and was named team captain as a senior. Three weeks before he graduated, Murphy died on the basketball court in a pick-up game.  In 1993, the athletic department named the award for the athlete who demonstrated perseverance and overcame adversity while achieving their academic and athletic goals at Roanoke College. Terlesky, a senior captain on the baseball team this spring, overcame the loss of his friend, roommate and teammate in the bullpen, Drew Wallace. Wallace, a two-year letterman for the Maroons as a relief pitcher, died suddenly in the summer of 2008 when Terlesky was a rising sophomore. Entering his senior year, he overcame tendentious in his throwing elbow to finish third on the team in strikeouts. He finished his career ranked fourth all-time in strikeouts. Paul Rice was a member of the famous “Five Smart Boys” who went to the NAIA National Tournament in 1938 and to the renowned National Invitational Tournament (NIT) in 1939, which was larger than the NCAA Tournament at the time. He was very active in the campus community, as a distinguished member of the Monogram Club and was an exceptional student in the process. Webb, a senior captain on the women’s basketball team, played both volleyball and women’s basketball before concentrating on basketball during her final two seasons. A bio-chemistry major, she was able to post a high GPA while earning more playing time and improving in nearly every stat category over her final two seasons for the Maroons.  She went to Texas A&M last summer as a paid intern for research within her major and recently earned a full scholarship to graduate school at the University of Virginia. There she will be doing medical research in molecular medicine. This school year, she earned the American Chemical Society Research Award and was named Outstanding Student and Healthcare Delivery Concentration Award from Roanoke College. She was also named to the 2010-11 ODAC Sportsmanship Team. Valles, a senior captain on the women’s lacrosse team, is arguably the most decorated women’s lacrosse player the 35-year history of the program. She became the school’s all-time scoring leader at the beginning of the season and recently became the ODAC’s all-time leader in career points (426) and goals (288).
