Capturing a moment in stone
A new hospice program allows patients to get their hands reproduced in stone as lasting memorials for their families.
The program, called “MOMENTS ... Cast in Stone,” is the brainchild of Bob Willis , a sculptor who works as the bereavement coordinator for Hospice of Oklahoma County Inc. and Integris Hospice House.
“We tend to measure life in terms of years, months, weeks, days ... even hours,” Willis said in a news release. “In reality, we live moment to moment. Creating a mold of someone's hands allows us to capture that moment.”
Willis already has made a casting for a current hospice patient, who was an avid rock climber.
“The cast of his hands, holding the knot in a climber's rope, is set on a rock base as a lasting reminder for his family of his passion for climbing,” an Integris spokeswoman wrote in the news release.

Hospice of Oklahoma County Inc. and Integris Hospice House are seeking volunteers for a training session Saturday, June 4.
The training is free and “open to anyone who has a heart for hospice care,” according to a news release.
Hospice care provides “physical, spiritual and emotional support during the dying process through a team that includes the medical director, nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains and trained community volunteers,” the release says.
Volunteers may run errands for caregivers, stay with patients while caregivers take breaks or spend time at the Hospice House sitting by bedsides, answering phones and assisting staff.
For more information, call Ruth Ann Frick , volunteer coordinator, at 848-8884.
Extension educator reminds us that not all fat is bad
Fat gets a bad rap. It's a necessary part of a healthy diet. So says Brenda Hill , an educator with the Oklahoma State University Extension office.
Fats help protect organs and prevent heat loss, she said in a news release. They provide calories, fat-soluble vitamins and essential fatty acids, some of which are not produced by the body and can only be obtained through food.
The trick is to avoid eating too much fat.
“Many people try to cut out meat and milk in an attempt to lower the fat content of their diet,” she said. “Your body needs adequate protein and calcium to function properly. Instead choose low-fat versions of your favorite foods, use low fat cooking methods and use less of foods that are high in fat.
