Retirees Hal and Wendy Denton have spent their life together restoring each home in which they've lived. They are proud of the three homes they lovingly restored over 42 years in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, and commissioned a triptych painting of the homes when they decided to move south. Their last New Jersey farm home sold three days after it was listed.
House & Garden PilgrimageLondon Town House & Garden in Edgewater is benefitting from a portion of the proceeds from the 74th annual Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage, held weekends through May 22.
Beautiful residences in six counties are showcased during the tour. Tour dates for Baltimore City and Calvert County have already passed. Kent, Baltimore, Anne Arundel and Prince George’s counties are featured on the remaining dates.
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 21, rain or shine, visit historic homes and gardens in southern Anne Arundel County. Many of the homes have never been on the pilgrimage or have not been open for many years.
This tour features a working winery and an active archaeological site. These and other sites will emphasize the historical significance and the architectural diversity of south county.
Begin at Historic London Town and Gardens in Edgewater where you can purchase tour tickets for $35 per person ($30 online before May 21) and tour the grounds before heading to the next nine sites on the tour. There are also stops for lunch and dinner at two churches.

But, they really tackled a challenge with their current home, the old 137-acre Sudley estate in West River. Wendy discovered it on the internet in 2005, but was told it was off the market. One day, heading to Deale for a ride on a boat owned by their sons, the two passed a "for sale" sign for a small farm. They pulled over to the side of the road and called the Realtor.
While they had the agent on the phone, they asked about Sudley.
"You're sitting in front of it!" the Realtor said.
A year later, it was theirs.
The couple purchased the dilapidated, overgrown property in 2007 and moved in the following March. They carefully set about restoring it to evoke its colonial grandeur, while making it livable for their 21st century lifestyle.

I use a woven dragon grass, hand-woven mat bought on clearance at a Pier 1 over 20 years ago. It doesn't mildew and just needs to be shaken out a couple times a month. It feels really good stepping out of the shower - like a quick foot massage. I got the idea from the one that had been at my front door for almost five years. Both are still in great condition and wouldn't give them up for anything.
I admit to having no mat in my bathroom at all. I don't feel I need one, the bathroom is not too big and I always dry my feet before stepping out of the shower. If I have to step on the floor, the flooring is peel-&-stick tiles (slate imitation) and they actually feel quite pleasant.
But my main reason is I have two dogs, and dog hair finds its way absolutely everywhere, even in the bathroom where the dogs never go. I have enough of cleaning up bust bunnies all over the house and I feel I don't need to provide them with additional places to hide.
We got a bamboo one from Target as a wedding gift and we LOVE IT. I was worried about functionality, but I find it works even better than traditional mats. Never, ever, ever again will I have a nasty cloth bath mat.
I haven't had any "build up" issues like some comments mention, but then again we sweep and mop our bathroom twice a week.
