North State in Brief: May 12, 2011

A Yakima, Washington woman and her five year old son were injured Tuesday afternoon in an accident on Highway 97 in solo after their car lost a wheel.

Alicia Jimenez, 37, was driving north on Tuesday near Juniper Lodge in about 13 hours with Jason Mendez when his 2000 Lincoln LS lost its left front wheel, a California Highway Patrol officer.

Jimenez started to slow, then suddenly accelerated, according to the CHP. She spent at least another car and continued north about three miles to Juniper Lodge.

As Jimenez approached the lodge of his car left the road and went halfway down a slope just above the sidewalk. The car struck several trees and rocks, spilling at least once before coming to rest on its wheels staying at the bottom of the slope, according to the CHP.

Jimenez and his son were both wearing the belt.

The authorities have taken Jimenez by ambulance to Sky Lakes Medical Center where she was treated for moderate injuries. Jason Mendez was transported to Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford, Oregon, where he was treated for serious injuries.It was not listed as a patient to the hospital this morning, according to a nursing supervisor.

The CHP attributed the wreck to a mechanical failure and driver error. Authorities do not suspect drugs or alcohol.

leadership camp aims campers

Shasta Youth Leadership Camp is accepting applications for campers at Camp this summer from July 10-13.

Applications are due May 27 The camp, located at Whiskeytown Environmental Camp, focuses on leadership development and drug and alcohol resistance skills for students in sixth, seventh and eighth.

Cost is $ 40 and scholarships are available.Interested students should contact their school office or the prevention of youth violence in Council 244-7194.

Country music group to play fundraiser

A group of national country music will be in Redding later this month to help raise funds for two children north of State fight against cancer.

Confederate Railroad will perform at 18:30, May 20 at the Théâtre des Cascades. Tickets are $ 29.

All proceeds after expenses will go to benefit the performance of 10 years, Matt Farley of Cottonwood, who has cancer of the bone marrow, and 6 years, Rachel Grant of Redding, who has cancer based on blood.

Not to be rude, but are you really dumb enough to ask this? Ok, I'll try to make this as simple as possible: if I used a fully 64-bit OS & fully 64-bit software, that is software optimized for 64-bit processors, on a fully 64-bit processor, what would the advantage of using that set-up over using a 32-bit OS & 32-bit software on a 32-bit processor? Intel said they expect Merom-based machines to be available for purchase toward the end of August. What's this about Apple receiving a large shipment of CPUs in September? They'd be a month behind the rest of the market by the time they started delivering systems. Intel said they were shipping Merom when they announced their earnings for last quarter. Oh, sure. But GNU/Linux could slowly introduce a standardized set of cell phone hardware platforms to build from, just like Intel and AMD and ATI (now a part of AMD, of course) and NVidia produce reference platform hardware that then anyone can make a compatible motherboard/daughter card from, what needs to happen is to have one particularly successful and particularly popular cell phone interface, and then (potentially) everyone would be clamoring to sell it to their customers. What those of us who have a Mac/PC, iPhone and now iPad are finding is that sync across these devices is not good and makes buying software a pain. This is why it makes sense to "freemium" MobileMe. Give the sync away and other basic stuff that makes people want to use their Apple gear and when they want to graduate make the paid step up significant. I find it incredibly hard to believe that Apple intends to maintain the closeness in specs that are currently present between the MacBook Pro and MacBook. It makes more sense for Apple to move the MBP to the Core2 Duo and leave the MacBook to the Yonah. This leaves two more speed bumps for the MacBook. First 10 2.16, then to 2.33, all the while leaving the MBP time to advance with the Merom so it can gain momentum against the MacBook.
