Dale The Whale

New York Rangers youth movement led them to the playoffs in the 2010-11 NHL season

During the Connecticut Whale break-up day following their 2010-11 season, Jim Schoenfeld, the New York Rangers assistant GM and interim assistant Coach, and Whale’ GM, spoke to reporters and addressed many key issues within the Whale’ organization and how he expects to improve the AHL team over the offseason. During his press conference, Schoenfeld also addressed some issues with the Rangers’.

"We went through a period in New York where we were banged up big time, we were calling guys up six deep and we didn't lose," said Schoenfeld. "The players came from Hartford and knew how to play, knew the system to play and were well conditioned. It was seamless, and without the extraordinary job that the guys here die, we wouldn't have made the playoffs."

Throughout the 2010-11 NHL season, the Rangers’ recalled a total of 10 players from Hartford Wolf Pack/Connecticut Whale—eight skaters and two goaltenders. Some of the first Ranger recalls of the season were forwards Evgeny Grachev, Jeremy Williams, and Dale Weise.

Williams, 27, participated in one game with the Rangers’ this season, and received six shifts during the game. Grachev, 21, played in eight games with the Rangers’ during the season, finishing with three shots-on-goal and a minus-3 rating. Weise, 22, played in 10 regular season games with the Rangers, recording nine shots-on-goal, 19-penalty minutes, and a minus-1 rating.

For Grachev, it was his NHL debut which he used to impress some of the Rangers’ coaching staff with his size and offensive ability.

Forwards Brodie DuPont, Chad Kolarik, Kris Newbury, and Mats Zuccarello were also mid-season recalls of the Rangers’ during the 2010-11 season.

DuPont, 24, played in one game and recorded one shot, while Kolarik, 25, played in four games and finished with one assist, four shots, two penalty-minutes, and a minus-1 rating. The Rangers were 2-2-0 with Kolarik in the line-up.

Newbury, 29, contributed to the Rangers’ with one assist, 35 penalty-minutes, six shots, and a minus-1 rating following 11 games with the team. Newbury spent most of his time with the Rangers playing an enforcers role on the fourth-line, and he was helpful on defensive zone face-offs. The Rangers were 5-5-1 with Newbury in the line-up.

The forward that had the greatest impact on the Rangers as a recall, was 23-year-old winger, Zuccarello. The Norwegian-star played in 42 regular season games with the team, scoring six goals and 17 assists for 23 points. He also recorded 74 shots-on-goal, four penalty-minutes, two game-winning goals, and he was a plus-4 rating. Zuccarello was a major contributor in the shoot-out as well, leading the Rangers’ to several key shoot-out victories during the season which ultimately helped the team reach the playoffs.

Dale's Whale (May 2011 Hawg of the Month - Fish with JD

Ay is already shaping up to be the toughest-ever round of the Hawg of the Month Contest…and it’s not getting any easier thanks to Dale Milam and his 40-pound striper that he caught while fishing with me on the American River. The big beast took a plastic eel at 2 p.m. on a bright sunny day (go figure!) and put up a battle that we won’t soon forget. Milam did the honorable thing and released this big female and is getting a fiberglass replica made. He’s also entered into the Hawg of the Month Contest in which he’ll have a shot at the monthly prize, some Pautzke’s headgear, and if he advances, a chance to win a free fishing trip with guide Bill “Swanny” Swann of Swanny’s Fishing.

Should we keep these big beauties horizontal with some support if we are gonna release them. I can’t help but think I wouldn’t see a trophy steelhead hanging from your Boga Grip. You have way more experience with this and I would love to read your thoughts. Maybe stripers are tougher but it just seems like it would really jack up a larger fish.Sincerely curious and not trying to be a smart ass. Tracer really wonderful and I would like to know what eels you started. I've been looking for a passage of the storm and had some success with the release of Gulp.
