Shippensburg makes some noise
Shippensburg made it a clean sweep of the men’s and women’s track championships at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference meet this weekend at the Bill Lennox Track Complex at Slippery Rock.
It marks the second consecutive year and the fourth time in school history that the Raiders have won both titles. They also did it in 1984 and 1993.
While the men’s team crushed the competition, winning by 63 points en route to its third consecutive title, the women only edged second-place Slippery Rocky by 7.5 points.
Neely Spence, the track MVP of the meet, helped make the championship possible. She dominated the distance events, winning the 1500-meter run in a time of 4:32.98 while taking home the crown in the 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 10:00.43. Spence crossed the line in the 5000 with a time of 16:53.40.
Erica Hess won the 400 for the sixth time in her career, including the third championship of her outdoor career, crossing the line in 55.39. She has finished with All-PSAC honors 15 times in her stellar career.
Caitlin Stuetz won the 100 hurdles, breaking the tape in 14.51, as the Raiders hung on for the close win.
The men’s team placed in 19 of the 21 events to dominate the meet. Among the winners was Matt Gillette, who ran a 3:55.45 in the 1500 to win his first outdoor conference championship.
Herman Kirkland was the champion in the long jump, hitting a mark of 24-feet-10 inches, and the 400 relay team lit up the clock at 40.90 to win the event.
Need To Know
• Western Oregon trailed by 11 points after the opening day of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference meet, but the Wolves would not be denied the title, rallying for its fifth championship in school history. The Wolves also mounted a comeback during the indoor meet earlier this year.
Matt Kaino was one of several first-place finishers for Western Oregon. He won the 400 with a time of 48.48 while Kyle Larson won the 800 in a time of 1:56.09.
Brett Campbell took home the title in the 110 hurdles (15.49) and Will Crook was the champion in the javelin with a throw of 196-1. Teammate Kody Reavis finished second with a career-best throw of 190-1.
The Wolves scored 141 points on the second day of competition to knock off Western Washington 203-173.5. Jason Slowey accounted for a good portion of the point total, racking up 48 with strong performances in the hammer throw (third), discus (second) and shot put (first).
